It's time to go to the vet!
Dogs love to go for a ride in the car - even if it's to the vet! Every dog,
regardless of age, needs to be examined by a veterinarian once a
year. Vaccinations should be given on time to ensure protection.
VACCINATIONS
Upper Respiratory Vaccine (VANGUARD PLUS 5)
Below is a combination vaccination given annually in young dogs
and every other year to every three years in middle aged to geriatric
dogs. The vaccination protects your dog from four diseases:
- Canine Distemper
- Adenovirus Type 2
- Parainfluenza
- Parvo virus
Dogs are rarely seen with Distemper and Parainfluenza due to
successful vaccination rates. Although, we still see several puppies who
are diagnosed with Parvo each year. These puppies usually have no
vaccination history. The doctors evaluate each dog's chance of
exposure, lifestyle, and vaccination history to determine if they can be
vaccinated less often. Please visit our vaccine protocol page for more
information. It is very important that young dogs are vaccinated every
three weeks until they are sixteen weeks old, and then yearly there after.
RABIES
The first Rabies vaccination that your dog receives (in the puppy
vaccination series) protects for 1 year. Any Rabies vaccination given
afterwards protects for 3 years.
Rabies is spread through a bite wound or scratch that punctures the
skin. The virus enters nerve cells at the site of the wound and travels to
the brain. At this point, other nerve pathways to muscles and organs
become affected.
In Idaho, bats have been the most common carrier of the
Rabies virus. This is dangerous for cats because they are more likely to
find a debilitated bat. For specific information regarding rabies in
Idaho, go to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare website. www.

BORDETELLA
The Bordetella vaccine is given internasally (up the nose). It is
recommended that Bordetella vaccinations are boostered every 6 to 8
months.
Infectious Tracheobrochitis (kennel cough) is characterized by a
hacking cough. It may sound as if your dog has something stuck in its
throat. The incubation period is from 2-14 days. Kennel cough is very
contagious among dogs. However, dogs who are not going to be
kenneled are unlikely to become infected. Most kennels and
obedience classes in Boise require the Bordetella vaccination. To
prevent over-vaccination, Vista Animal Hospital only vaccinates
against kennel cough when a patient is going to visit a kennel or enrolls
in obedience classes.
CORONAVIRUS
Coronavirus causes mild diarreha in puppies. Idaho has a low
incident rate and vaccination protocols vary. Vista Animal Hospital
does not vaccinate for canine coronavirus unless it is specifically
requested.
RATTLESNAKE VACCINATION
A comprehensive physical examination is required for annual
vaccinations. Your dog must be in good health in order to receive any
vaccinations.
