Canine Neuter/Canine Orchiectomy
(The removal of the testicles to prevent reproduction )

At Vista Animal Hospital, we prefer the puppy or kitten to be at
least 6 months old. Animals at this age heal quickly and return to
their "active" lifestyles almost immediately.

Following are a description and actual pictures of a neuter:
The incision is closed and
the sutures are removed
after 10 days.
The spermatic cord is
inspected for bleeding
then slowly released
back into the scrotum.
Then the procedure is
repeated on the other
testicle.
Following ligation,
the spermatic cord
is incised
Three forceps are placed
on the spermatic cord. A
ligature is placed below
the second and third
forceps to stop the blood
flow to the testicle.
A pre-scrotal incision is
made and the first
testicle is exteriorized
.
Shown in the picture at
left is the incision sight
that has been shaved
and scrubbed in
preparation for surgery.
*** A Feline Neuter is done using the same
method, however  in most cases there are no
external sutures that need to be removed.
