Canine Neuter/Canine Orchiectomy
(The removal of the testicles to prevent reproduction )
At Vista Animal Hospital, we prefer the puppy or kitten to be at
least 6 months old. Animals at this age heal quickly and return to
their "active" lifestyles almost immediately.
Following are a description and actual pictures of a neuter:
The incision is closed and the sutures are removed after 10 days.
|
The spermatic cord is inspected for bleeding then slowly released back into the scrotum. Then the procedure is repeated on the other testicle.
|
Following ligation, the spermatic cord is incised
|
Three forceps are placed on the spermatic cord. A ligature is placed below the second and third forceps to stop the blood flow to the testicle.
|
A pre-scrotal incision is made and the first testicle is exteriorized.
|
Shown in the picture at left is the incision sight that has been shaved and scrubbed in preparation for surgery.
|
*** A Feline Neuter is done using the same
method, however in most cases there are no
external sutures that need to be removed. ***
