Canine Hypothyroidism
Canine Hypothyroidism is by definition a deficiency of thyroid
hormones in the dogs body.
There most common signs of the disease are:
- Unexplained weight gain
- Lethargy
- Abnormal shedding patterns, and poor coat quality.
The symptoms above are broad and can be signs of several
health concerns. If the doctor is suspicious of a thyroid problem they
will run a geriatric blood profile. This determines if the thyroid values
along with other organ values are within normal ranges. If the thyroid
value on the initial test is low the doctor will send another sample of
your pet's blood to have a full thyroid profile performed. If the value is
truly low, your pet will be started on a thyroid hormone supplement. It is
necessary to draw samples of blood and recheck the thyroid levels
after supplementation has been started to ensure your pet is receiving
the proper dose.
